A proposal headed to Governor Quinn's desk tightens up standards on who qualifies to receive handicapped parking privileges. If you're disabled but physically capable of walking and putting a coin in a parking meter, you may not be eligible to park in handicapped spots. The measure comes after Secretary of State Jesse White teamed up with law enforcement agencies across to uncover widespread disabled parking abuse.
The proposal also bumps up the fine for those who use a disabled parking placard that doesn't belong to them. Several times a year, Secretary of State Police patrol shopping centers around Illinois, looking for drivers who are illegally parking in handicapped spots.
