The Madison County Health Department is keeping an eye on the spread of the Zika Virus. The Zika Virus is transmitted through the bite of an infected mosquito, and is similar to the West Nile Virus. A couple of cases in Illinois were confirmed last month, apparently affecting people who had traveled abroad.
Madison County Health Department spokesman Amy Yeager tells The Big Z unless you are traveling to places where the virus has been verified and mosquitoes are present, you should be safe.

The virus is spread only through mosquito bites, so the risk in Illinois is virtually nil. You can keep track of the spread of the virus through the Centers for Disease Control website, www.cdc.gov .
