Illinois families are being urged to check their homes for radon this month. It’s Radon Action Month, and the Madison County Health Department is giving away free testing kits. You can pick up a kit during regular business hours at the department’s facility on Edwardsville Road in Wood River
The department’s Public Information Officer Amy Yeager tells The Big Z it’s a good time to make sure you don’t have radon, which occurs naturally as an indirect decay product of uranium or thorium.

Radon is the leading cause of cancer in non-smokers, and has been found in about 40% of Illinois homes tested. For more information, call 692-8954, extension 3.
