The Madison County Board has approved the expansion of an enterprise zone that could help attract a new tenant at the Gateway Commerce Center in the central part of the county. The large, primarily warehouse center could soon become the home of one of the largest warehouses in the country if the development moves ahead with plans for the project.
The center is located along Illinois 255, Highway 111, and Interstate 270, and falls under the jurisdiction of Edwardsville, Pontoon Beach and Madison County. The county board this week approved expanding the enterprise zone, following the lead of the local government boards in Edwardsville and Pontoon Beach. Businesses in the zone are exempt from sales taxes on building materials and also receive a 10 year property tax abatement, the first seven of which include no property taxes and then are phased in the final three years. Local officials have been told that up to 800 jobs could be created if the center is picke to host the $80 million warehouse.
