The Grafton City Council cast a vote of “no confidence” in Mayor Tom Thompson at its meeting this week. By a vote of 5-1, the council issued the vote without much comment but also approved a motion asking the city attorney to contact the Illinois Attorney General to investigate the mayor and the city.
Grafton Alderman Roger Crone suggested the investigation, which was also approved by a vote of 5-1. Alderman Bobbie Amburg voted “no” in each case. The votes came at around midnight Wednesday morning, after the regular monthly city council meeting began at 7pm Tuesday. The council had been in closed session with the mayor, the city attorney, city clerk, and city engineer for about three hours when they returned and took the votes. City Attorney Jim Schrempf says he will wait for more information from Alderman Crone regarding what to ask of the attorney general’s office. In recent months, some alderman and the mayor have clashed over several issues facing the city.
