The Wood River City Council met for the first time Monday since the death of Mayor Fred Ufert on March 25. A somber mood fell over council chambers last night as the meeting was called to order. Mayor Pro-Tem Cheryl Maguire offered her thoughts to those in attendance.
A special meeting will be held this Thursday at 7pm to pick a new mayor from the four council members finish the final two years of Ufert’s term.

In other council business, the city’s budget for fiscal year 2015-2016 was approved. The budget comes in at $21.7-million, which is about 56% bigger than the one from last year. Most of that is due to the cost of building a new police station according to City Manager Jim Schneider, who says BP is covering most of the increase.
