A Cottage Hills man was re-arrested Thursday morning after fleeing in handcuffs. 42-year-old Russell Watson Jr. of the 1,300 block of Ninth Street was arrested on outstanding warrants, placed in handcuffs and put in the back of a squad car. A Madison County Sheriff deputy said the locking mechanism on the squad car door either malfunctioned or didn't engage, and Watson fled. Watson was then re-arrested after he returned to his home, without handcuffs on, about 90 minutes later.
Watson is being charged with one count of escape, a Class 2 Felony, and criminal damage to state property. The damage to state property charge comes after Watson went to a friend's house and had the handcuffs, which are state property, cut off. Watson is being held at the Madison County Jail, bond was set at $75,000.
