Health care professionals and emergency officials are keeping a close eye on the heat. The heatwave that hass descended across the area has prompted several Alton locations to offer their fracilities as daytime cooling centers.

About one-thousand people have suffered heat related deaths in Illinois over the past 15 years.  Open during daytime hours are the Alton Square Mall, the Salvation Army, Senior Services Center, and the YWCA. Alton Fire Chief Bernie Sebold says they are going above and beyond.

Sebold comments

He says fire stations 1 & 2 are also available on a short-term basis, as they may not be staffed if called out on an emergency run. If you live outside of Alton, you can dial 2-1-1 from any land-line phone to contact the United Way to find a center near you.
