Supporters of a school consolidation referendum in the Riverbend are optimistic the question may pass this year. School districts could be consolidated into one if voters in East Alton, Wood River and Hartford decide it is the right move. Consolidation of Wood-River Hartford School District 15, East Alton School District 13 and East Alton-Wood River High School into one Community Unit School District is headed to the ballot in November.
Chuck Johanssen, Chairman for the Committee of 10 tells The Big Z he is encouraged about the possibility of passing the referendum this time around.

Opponents say claims of economic benefits are greatly exaggerated, and the benefits are not sustainable. The issue failed by 12 votes out of nearly 2,300 cast in 2011, and by 8 votes cast last year. Attempts to contact opponents of the consolidation issue for comment have thus far been unsuccessful.
