IIllinoisans will be required to purchase health insurance coverage or face monetary penalties. U.S. Supreme Court Justices upheld the individual mandate portion of the Affordable Care Act. Republicans had challenged the mandate, claiming the government could not force people to purchase insurance. Our local congressmen are offering different opinions as to the effect of the ruling.


Chief Justice John Roberts joined the four liberals on the court in ruling that the individual mandate provision of the law can stand as a tax. That is a big sticking point for Republican John Shimkus (pictured) of Collinsville.

In a written release, Belleville Democrat Jerry Costello says "Now that the Supreme Court has found it constitutional, moving forward, we need to concentrate on implementing the rest of the law as efficiently as possible."  The law is expected to impact millions of Americans who currently do not have health insurance and many say it will give President Obama a leg up in re-election bid.
