A man who fell to his death while working at ConAgra in Alton on Saturday has been identified. Authorities say 47 year old Jay VanBuskirk of Edwardsville apparently lost his footing while stepping off a lift Saturday afternoon. Alton Police say foul play is not suspected and all indications point to an industrial accident. VanBuskirk died at the scene.
Becky Niiya is director of communications for ConAgra Foods:
She said OSHA would be among those taking a look at the apparent accident. Alton Fire and Police responded to the mill in downtown Alton just after 4pm Saturday and found VanBuskirk had fallen about 60 to 70 feet. He had just ridden a "man-lift" from the 9th floor to the 5th floor break room when he appeared to have lost his footing and then fell to his death. VanBuskirk worked at the plant for a little less than a year as a utility sweeper. Funeral arrangements are pending.
