The lone social worker at Civic Memorial High School was honored Tuesday with the Peabody Energy Leader in Education Award. Janet Craig was surprised by representatives of the company, co-workers, students and family during the lunchtime award ceremony. Craig has been at the school for seven years, and works with more than 100 students a month.
Craig was nominated by Civic Memorial Principal Debra Pitts, who was a past winner of the award. In addition to serving the students at school, Craig is a LifeSavers advisor, which provides students with peer support in a weekend retreat setting. Craig was nominated by Pitts in a letter at the beginning of the school year and she was selected by the company from 42 nominations. As part of the honor, Craig received a check for $1,000 from Peabody Energy.
