The re-greening of the former Waldow Municipal Golf Course in Alton continues, and the work that has been accomplished over the past year has earned the city recognition for its efforts. The HeartLands Conservancy presented Mayor Tom Hoechst with the annual Carl V. Anderson Conservation Project Award of Honor. It is awarded to outstanding projects in conservation engineering by the Association of Conservation Engineers.
Some of the work done so far includes a creek restoration and the planting of about 700 new trees. HeartLands Conservancy's Megan Riechmann:
A major goal of the project to repurpose the land is to develop it in an environmentally sensitive nature. With a mixed-use development the goal, there is a plan developing to prepare for a shopping-mall sized parking lot and the runoff that would create.
