Governor Pat Quinn will soon sign a bill increasing the state tax on cigarettes by one dollar. The price hike brings the total Illinois tax on a pack of smokes up to $1.98. Democrat Representative Dan Beiser of Alton does not support the move.
Republican Representative Dwight Kay also thinks this is a bad move.
The increase applies to most other tobacco products as well, and the measure also includes a new tax on hospitals. Together, it's estimated that will bring in 800 million dollars in new tax revenue and federal matching funds to help fill a huge hole in the state's Medicaid budget.
