If you are a customer of bars and restaurants in Alton, you may soon see more cigarette diffusers near the doors. The Alton City Council is set to vote on a resolution tonight that would make bar and restaurant owners place them near their businesses. The measure passed unanimously in committee on Monday.
You can’t smoke inside anymore, following the passage of a state law several years ago, so many smokers head for the exits when they need a fix. If there are no ashtrays, the butts usually wind up on the sidewalk or street. So, Jimmy Johnson of Johnson’s Corner on State Street thinks the state is to blame for this latest push against smokers:

Johnson says his customers are a courteous bunch, and dispose of their cigarettes properly, but understands not all bars and restaurants have outside smoking areas to make things convenient for their smoking patrons.
Several other bars were contacted for this story, but declined the offer to comment. The Alton City Council meets tonight at 7:30.
