Most communities in the Riverbend have ordinances prohibiting backyard chickens in residential areas, but with Alton now allowing the practice Godfrey may soon be doing the same. Having backyard chickens is a growing trend across the nation, and one Godfrey resident has asked for the Animal Control Ordinance to be amended to allow chickens in the residential district. That topic will be discussed at Monday night's Public Safety Committee Meeting.
Godfrey Mayor Mike McCormick says trustee Eldon "Twirp" Williams - who chairs the committee - has been researching the issue.
The resident already had chickens at his house, and says he was unaware that it was prohibited. He has been given temporary permission to keep the chickens until the issue is resolved. The Public Safety Committee will discuss it tomorrow at 6pm at the Godfrey Village Hall.
