An Elder with the Zion Lutheran Church in Bethalto is facing charges in the wake of the discovery of video cameras set up at the church on Christmas Eve. 58-year-old David L. Von Bergen is charged with one misdemeanor and 2 felony counts of Unauthorized Video Recording, as well as one count of Conspiracy (Obstructing Justice). He allegedly conspired with 36-year-old Pastor Kale W. Hanson to destroy memory cards.
Hanson is also charged with conspiracy. Investigators say Von Bergen learned the cameras had been discovered in the church earlier that evening and left with them, but not before he and Hanson agreed to destroy the evidence on the memory cards. Police later arrested Von Bergen, who was released on bond December 26. In building a case, investigators believe at least one minor was recorded in the changing area of the sacristy. The investigation is ongoing, and anyone with additional information is urged to call Bethalto Police at 377-5266.
