The Madison County State's Attorney's office has filed murder charges against a Centreville man in connection with a body found at Horseshoe Lake State Park over the weekend. 42-year-old Scottie Thompson was arrested and taken into custody in Belleville. He had only been out of prison since February, having done time for a 1989 murder in St. Clair County.
Investigators think Thompson and 20-year-old Dakota C. Jones met Saturday night in East St. Louis and Thompson agreed to give Jones a ride to meet a friend around 10:30. Police think the fatal assault occurred several hours later with Thompson eventually dumping Jones' body into the lake. If convicted of murder, Thompson could face up to 60 years in prison, and would have to serve 100% of his sentence.
