Two people have been charged in connection with a high-speed pursuit that began in Granite City and ended in the Riverbend on Wednesday. Police say the suspects fled from a traffic stop in Granite City into Missouri, then back into Illinois and north through Wood River where they were taken into custody.
Charged are 25-year-old Blade Johnson and 24-year-old Ashley Petrillo with possession of a stolen vehicle and aggravated fleeting or attempting to elude police. Granite City Police say the initial traffic stop was for a possible stolen vehicle, but the suspect vehicle fled and eventually drove across the Stan Musial Veteran’s Memorial Bridge where the pursuit was called off. Police in Venice spotted the vehicle a short time later reentering Illinois on the McKinley Bridge and picked up the pursuit north on Route 3 where speeds reportedly hit near 100 miles per hour. Wood River Police used “stop sticks” as the vehicle approached the city, damaging the tires. The car continued onto the Berm Highway, but was stopped by flat tires near the entrance to the Mel Price Locks and Dam and the suspects were taken into custody without incident.
