The Development Director of the Community Hope Center says she hopes the arrest of two volunteers accused of stealing food will not affect the level of confidence the community has that they can serve the needy. The Center is located in Cottage Hills and has been serving the community for years, helping put food on countless tables. Angela Valdez says the arrests this week is disappointing, but stresses this was an isolated incident.
She says all volunteers go through a screening process, and these two did not raise any red flags. The Community Hope Center serves anyone who is in need, including volunteers, and anyone that needs assistance with food is eligible to sign up as a client. She says this was an unnecessary act and they are very grateful for the Alton Police Department for their help in handling this situation. 45-year-old Jerri A. Jones of the 7,300 block of Montclaire Avenue in Godfrey and 64-year-old Betty C. Jones of the 400 block of Augusta Street in Alton were charged with felony Theft over $500.
