If you’re buying colored contact lenses for your Halloween costume, make sure they’re from a licensed eye care professional. This warning comes from the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation, which regulates dispensers of eyeglasses and contact lenses. If they don’t come from a licensed dealer, they may not fit right, which can cause corneal scratches, eye ulcers, and infections that may even lead to blindness.

The department is warning kids and adults that buying these illegally sold lenses can cause damage. “We’ve had young people in Illinois lose their vision from wearing contact lenses that were not appropriately fitted and not cleaned appropriately,” said IDFPR spokeswoman Susan Hofer. It’s against the law to sell contact lenses without a prescription in Illinois, and stores doing so face fines up to $10,000. Hofer says that if you know of any stores selling colored contacts without a license, you should report them at http://www.idfpr.com/.
