The Alton Police Chief is asking anyone that thinks they are a victim of a crime to call police before posting about it on social media.  A fairly recent phenomena of posting about alleged crimes on Facebook, Twitter, and other sites has resulted in detectives sometimes trying to play catch-up to a fervor that has built before an official report has been filed, potentially hampering their investigations.

Chief Jason Simmons tells The Big Z a call to police should always be the first step in reporting a crime.

In some instances, local police have found the details of the posts are not completely accurate, and some are complete fabrications.  In a recent case involving a woman allegedly being attacked at a downtown Alton bar, nearly 12 hours had lapsed between the Facebook posting and the filing of the police report.  Authorities say valuable time can be lost in an investigation when there is a delay in reporting a potential crime.
