A group of Illinoisans are calling on U.S. Sen. Mark Kirk (R-Ill., pictured) to join in an effort to pass comprehensive immigration reform. A petition has been delivered to Kirk’s office in Chicago by Organizing for Action, urging him to support an immigration reform effort by the Gang of Eight in Washington. The Gang of Eight is made up of top Republicans and Democrats and while Kirk isn’t part of the group, his democratic counterpart U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) is.

After meeting with a member of Kirk’s staff, Organizing for Action says Kirk is receptive to a comprehensive immigration bill and has been meeting with Durbin on a weekly basis. In a conference call following the delivery of the petition, a Kirk staffer said the senator thought now is the right time to bring the issue to the congressional floor.
