Passing a stopped school bus is against the law, but not everyone agrees a bus-mounted camera to catch the scofflaws is a good idea.   A bill allowing school districts to equip buses with cameras to catch violators failed in Springfield, but the sponsor could bring the measure back if he can round up the votes for it.

“Finally, a bill that allows school districts to do something that makes the decision on their own,” said State Rep. David Reis (R-Sainte Marie).  Others condemned the bill. “Would you support legislation that would mount a camera on every vehicle? Because that would probably ensure that we didn’t have a lot of violations of other traffic laws,” State Rep. Ann Williams (D-Chicago) said after telling the sponsor she didn’t believe the cameras would improve safety.
