The walls should come tumbling down this week on a building at the corner of Broadway and Ridge in Alton. Part of the building burned last fall, and final preparations are being made to tear down the structure and prepare it for possible development. No one was injured in the multi-alarm fire from October 1-2 that drew several surrounding fire departments and many bystanders.
Hopp Hollow Development Company owns the building. Protective fencing was put into place a few weeks ago, and power lines to the building were removed yesterday do demolition crews can begin their work. Several businesses at the location have moved to new homes, as have occupants of seven second floor apartments. The fire began in the basement of what was once BD Sports, but an exact cause has never been determined because investigators could not get into the building due to the lack of structural safety.
