The Illinois Senate has sent a handful of budget bills to the governor, including a supplemental budget bill that will catch the state up on its unpaid bills.  The supplemental budget bill, which will pay off billions of dollars in unpaid bills this fiscal year and ensure there is no backlog of unpaid bills next fiscal year, is the only budget bill to date to receive bipartisan support.

State Sen. Heather Steans (D-Chicago) says that’s because it will get the state back in the good graces of vendors and service providers, who have been waiting months for checks from the state.  State Sen. Andy Manar (D-Bunker Hill), while complimentary of bill, says it could do more for education. He was one of two lawmakers who don’t vote yes on the legislation.  The Senate passed another higher education budget bill and the human services budget bill, on top of the supplemental budget bill.
All three pieces of legislation now go to the governor’s desk.
