The fate of St. Mary's Church in Brussels is still up in the air, and a final decision may not come until the early spring, and even that is unknown. Springfield Catholic Diocese Bishop Thomas John Paprocki is still expected to hear from other members of the parish in Calhoun County before making a final decision, along with hearing from the insurance company following a Christmas Eve fire that destroyed the church building.
Father Don Roberts is the pastor of the parish, and says until the bishop makes a decision, they will just wait and see. Insurance investigators have been to the church building, and there is some indication that since the exteriors walls remain, the building can be salvaged. However, since the parish itself is made up of three churches, including St. Mary's, there are two other buildings in nearby towns that are used for church services and events, although they are smaller than St. Mary's building. A meeting is planned for later this month between parish financial representatives and the diocese to discuss the future.
