The Illinois Department of Natural Resources has some tips to help boaters enjoy the water this summer. It's National Safe Boating Week, and IDNR spokesman Chris Young reminds state laws apply to boaters, just like drivers.
Conservation police will be looking for drunk boat operators, and it's also advised you wear a life jacket.

Anyone on a jet ski, regardless of age, is required to wear a life jacket. 14 people died in boating accidents last year in Illinois. Yong says almost half of those deaths involved alcohol, and nearly all may have been prevented if the boater had been wearing a life jacket.
