The mall that was featured in the 1980 movie “The Blues Brothers” is getting the wrecking ball. Dixie Square Mall in Harvey was the scene of a car chase where Jake and Elwood, played by John Belushi and Dan Aykroyd, take their “Bluesmobile” into the mall, cruising down the aisles and through stores as they evade the Illinois State Police. The building was closed in 1978, but producers persuaded the city to let them film there.

The mall has sat vacant and in disrepair since filming of the car chase wrapped in 1979. To get rid of the eyesore, the state was able to obtain a $4 million federal grant to assist with cleanup and demolition. Gov. Pat Quinn and Harvey Mayor Eric Kellogg say the hope is to see some retail move onto the location again. Quinn was on hand Wednesday to kick off demolition, though asbestos abatement began in January.
