Even if you are not an active birdwatcher, you are still invited to the annual Christmas Bird Count, being held locally on Saturday. From December 14 through January 5, tens of thousands of volunteers throughout the nation will take part in an adventure that has become a family tradition among generations. This is the 111th annual Christmas Bird Count.
Those wanting to take part locally can meet at the Alton Sierra Club office Saturday morning at 7, according to Sierra Club head Christine Favilla.
Participants will log birds of all kinds, from the majestic Bald Eagle, to Finches to Sparrows. To register, call 377-1477. Later that evening, there will be a winter solstice at the LaVista Ecological Learning Center in Godfrey. While not linked as a common promotion, Favilla says many participants will take part in both events. The event at LaVista is from 7-9pm, and is basically a get together of like-minded people.
