An area congressman is sponsoring legislation to restore funding to the 149 air traffic control towers slated to close under the sequestration cuts. Those airports included the one at St. Louis Regional Airport in Bethalto, but the closings were postponed earlier this month after a number of legal challenges were brought by airport tower operators.
Congressman Rodney Davis says there are areas in the FAA budget that can be addressed to free up funding for the towers.
The legislation is similar to a bipartisan amendment offered last month to the Senate appropriations bill, but was denied a vote on the Senate floor. As it stands now, the FAA is delaying all closings until June 15. If the tower were to close, there are procedures in place that would allow air traffic to continue.
