Bicyclists sometimes have to dodge obstacles on the bike trail along the Great River Road, as responsibility for the upkeep and maintenance of the path is split between numerous entities and there may sometimes be confusion as to who is in charge of what. The Great Rivers Land Trust is one of a number of non-governmental agencies that has taken an interest in the trail’s condition in recent years, and the executive director of the organization says they are trying to heighten awareness of the trail’s needs.
Alley Ringhausen tells The Big Z one question is how to direct bicyclists through Riverfront Park if they want to connect from the levee to the Great River Road.

The Vadalabene Bike Trail between Alton and Pere Marquette State Park is one of the best bike rides in the region, according to Ringhausen. At least four government agencies have jurisdiction over the trail, including Alton, Godfrey, the Illinois Department of Transportation, and the Illinois Department of Natural Resources.
