While authorities say there is no evidence of a panther sighting in southern Macoupin County Sunday night, that didn't stop the story from spreading on social media.  Sunday around 9:10pm, a Macoupin County newspaper posted on its Facebook page that the county's Sheriff Department was investigating an unconfirmed report of a large black cat, possibly a panther, on Brighton-Bunker Hill Road near Wood Hills Lane, which is just east of Woodburn.

Reiher tells The Big Z they occasionally get reports of panther-like animals in the area, but repeats there have been no confirmed sightings.  He says anyone keeping a panther as a pet would have to get approval from the state, and he knows of no such instances in the area.
