As lawmakers in Springfield continue to battle issues like pension reform and gun rights, one local representative is targeting another problem: heroin use by teenagers in Illinois. State Representative Dan Beiser of Alton has co-sponsored legislation to create the Young Adults Heroin Use Task Force to study the problem in high schools across the state.

Beiser says that now is the time to focus on this issue since the number of heroin overdose deaths has risen steadily over the last few years.

Beiser Comments

The task force would consist of seven legislators who would listen to expert testimony, educators, and drug enforcement officials to develop a strategy to decrease the use of heroin by teenagers and young adults.

H.B. 946 has been referred to the House Rules Committee.
