As word circulates about more scammers taking trusting homeowners to the proverbial cleaners, the Better Business Bureau is urging them to do their homework before hiring a contractor. Earlier this week, an East Alton man was charged with home repair fraud after allegedly taking a $120,000 payment for tile work that was never done. BBB Investigator Bill Smith says, unfortunately, this kind of crime is seen all too often.

Among the tips are to ask at least three companies for bids, ask about the company’s insurance, and ask if the contractor is licensed for the type of work you need. The BBB also recommends that you make sure to get a copy of the agreement in writing before work begins and to never pay the full amount up front.
