A bank robbery forced an elementary school to go on lock down Tuesday afternoon. That's after an armed man held up a First National Bank branch yesterday in Alhambra. Officials say they called for the lock down because of the bank's close proximity to the Alhambra Primary School on Main Street. The students were held for more than an hour after classes let out until authorities determined it was safe. No injuries were reported.
The alleged robber got away with an undetermined amount of cash after he walked into the bank around 1:45pm on Tuesday. The Madison County Sheriff's Department reports the man was holding a handgun and demanded money from a bank employee. He then fled the bank on foot and no vehicle was seen in the area that he might have used to escape. A K-9 unit from Collinsville Police was called in to assist the FBI and the Illinois State Police in the investigation. The suspect description is a male wearing a gray hoodie, dark pants and a white hat.
