The annual "Back to School Stay in School" event sponsored by the Alton branch of the NAACP is set for next Saturday, August 11. The event begins at 10am at James Killion Park at Salu in Alton. This is the 14th year the Alton chapter has provided school supplies to students in Alton. Parents must accompany their child to the event to receive the supplies.
Organizers hope to get enough donations to send every kid home with a backpack, in addition to the other supplies. The NAACP's Joe Williams says the Simmons Law Firm donated 1,000 backpacks, but more donations are needed.
In addition to the giveaway, there will be lunch for those who attend. Free transportation is being provided by Illinois Central Bus Company, and for pick-up locations, contact the Alton School District Office at 467-2600. About 1,000 students are expected to attend the event. Anyone who can donate to the effort can do so by sending a check to the Alton NAACP at P.O. Box 1216, Alton, IL 62002.
