Illinois Governor Bruce Rauner appears to be in favor of a bill on its way to his desk that would allow for automatic voter registration. Rauner said he would need to see the exact language of the bill, but in past comments seemed to be in favor of making it easier for people to register.
The bill approved in the House and the Senate would set up automatic voter registration for people visiting the Secretary of State’s Office, Department on Aging, departments of Human Services, Healthcare and Family Services and Employment Security. Supporters of the idea called voting a fundamental right, while critics…mostly Republicans…said it was a ploy by Democrats to build up their base. Four states already have some form of automatic voter registration and two-dozen other states are considering a similar plan.
