AT&T, in trying to promote safety, is trying to make hashtag X (#X) a thing. The company’s Illinois president, Paul La Schiazza, says it’s a good way to tell people, I’m about to get behind the wheel, so I’m unavailable to text for a while.

“We thought, in keeping with the language of texting, that would be perfect,” La Schiazza says.

He says there's also an app that puts the phone into a “drive mode” which invites callers to leave a message.

“No text is worth dying for,” La Schiazza says.
