The appointment of department heads is expected at tonight’s Alton City Council meeting, and at least one of the appointments could be a point of contention. Alton Police Chief Jason Simmons has been in the position since shortly after Brant Walker became mayor in the spring of 2013. Supporters and detractors of his spoke to the Committee of the Whole on Monday.
Supporters of Simmons included Marcus Harrison, owner of Harrison Funeral Chapel on Central Avenue.

One vocal critic of the chief was law enforcement trainer Jan Mirikitani.

Per Illinois statute, the police chief is an appointed position that serves until removed by the mayor. Also on tonight’s agenda is the text amendment that could allow for a tattoo shop to move into a shop on Broadway. Tonight’s meeting at Alton City Hall begins at 7:30.
