Illinois State Treasurer Dan Rutherford has again shattered a record for returning money. Each year, the number jumps higher. Rutherford ’s I-Cash program returns unclaimed property to the original owners. 2012 has set a new record by returning 28 million dollars more than the previous year.
It happened in a year with a name change, a new, more user-friendly website, and materials that feature recent claimants.
Rutherford set a record in 2011 - his first year in office - by returning 101-million dollars, which was a 23 percent increase over the previous year. The treasurer says he’s applying smart business principals to his office, which means more people are getting their own money or other assets back without using tax dollars.
