The second fire of the day in South Roxana displaced nearly a dozen people from a home Monday night. Everyone inside was able to escape into the cold without serious injury and the fire was contained to a basement bedroom. Fire officials say the initial investigation shows the fire may have started because of a child playing with a lighter.
The fire broke out just before 9pm Monday at a home in the 200 block of Missouri Avenue. Authorities say several children were treated at the scene for smoke inhalation and an infant was transported to Alton Memorial Hospital for treatment. The basement sustained mostly smoke damage, although the flames did damage one of two bedrooms. A special collection of clothing for the children is taking place at South Roxana Elementary School for kids clothes ages infant to 9 years.
