Chicago State Representative LaShawn Ford (pictured) has been indicted on federal bank fraud charges. He's the second Chicago lawmaker this year to come under indictment. Derrick Smith was indicted back in March for allegedly accepting a cash bribe in exchange for securing a state grant.
Political Scientist Kent Redfield says it's no secret that Illinois has a reputation for corruption but it's time to start holding public officials accountable for their behavior.
The charges against Ford are not directly related to his position as a lawmaker. He allegedly got a 500-thousand-dollar fraudulent line of increase from the failed ShoreBank. He was supposed to pay for investment properties in Chicago, but instead paid for a car, credit cards and his 2006 campaign. Ford is the second lawmaker to be indicted this year.
