An Ameren Illinois spokesman is defending his company’s request for a $110-million rate hike. The Illinois Commerce Commission is looking over the request and taking comment from the public. Ameren Illinois’ Brian Bretsch tells The Big Z the utility is in the midst of a 10-year upgrade to Smart Grid technology.

He says this will allow Ameren Illinois to recover its costs for maintaining, operating and improving its electric system throughout its service territory. Bretsch says they will be investing roughly $122-million in electric upgrades throughout the service territory. About $6.5-million of that is planned for Madison County, according to Bretsch.
