More than 500 graves will be decorated this morning at the Alton National Cemetery on Pearl Street as part of the Wreaths Across America program. For about two decades, the decorations have been placed at the Arlington National Cemetery and others across the country and this will be the fifth year for decorations in Alton.
Alton resident Margaret Hopkins is organizing the effort again and says she was inspired to start a program in Alton after seeing a story on the effort on a television newsmagazine.
The ceremony itself is scheduled for 11am, and should last about a half hour at Alton National Cemetery. Donations can still be made to Alton Wreaths Across America at P.O. Box 181 Alton, IL, 62002. For more information, contact Hopkins at 474-2005.
