The Alton City Council is one vote away from raising rates for the collection and disposal of your trash. This is a response to the rate increases it pays to Allied Waste that was negotiated when the contract was agreed upon three years ago.
Alton's Corporation Counselor Jim Schrempf says the increase will amount to a 4% increase each year.
This is the third year of the nine year contract. The ordinance providing for the increase was given first reading last week, and is expected to be given final approval at the October 23 city council meeting. Assuming it passes, rates would go up on November 1 from $17.40 to $18.10 per month. The ordinance also further increases the fee by 4 percent on Oct. 1, 2014, and every Oct. 1 after that.
