Alton aldermen have given permission to the Fire Chief to buy a new pumper truck at a cost of $328,500. The cost is quite a bit less than a pumper of its design would normally run, since it is a dealer demo. The last time the city purchased a pumper truck was in 1997, and Alton Mayor Tom Hoechst says while finances still are not that great, reinvestment in the different departments must begin again.
Hoechst says the police department normally gets four new cars each year, but has been cut down to three. Still, Hoechst says he will do what he can to make the finances work out to where the different departments have the equipment it needs to run the city.
