It's the first day of classes for students and staff of the Alton School District, and police will focus extra attention on motorists. Alton Police remind you they will be cracking down on speeders and others violating the rules of the road in school zones all year, but especially as school begins. The speed limit is 20 miles per hour in a school zone and use of a cell phone is not allowed.

Motorists can expect several marked and unmarked patrol cars in the school zones in an attempt to keep the kids safe. Texting is illegal while driving, and use of a cell phone while in a school or construction zone is also against the law.
