A large water main project along a portion of Belle Street in Alton should be coming to an end in about a month.  Work began in mid-September on the project to replace the existing 6-inch main with a new 8-inch main from Mitchell Street to 20th Street.

Alton Public Works Director Bob Barnhart tells The Big Z the project will also improve stormwater flow.

A project on Seminary Street is also showing progress.  The railroad bridge over the road is being prepared for higher speed trains that are scheduled to stop in Alton in a few years.  Along with updating the bridge to accommodate Amtrak and Union Pacific Rail needs, construction crews are widening the roadway as part of the plan.  Barhart expects that project to be done in a week or so.
