Bringing more tourists to Alton and a number of other cities is the overall goal of a group that recognizes the history of Abraham Lincoln. The Lincoln Heritage Coalition has named Alton a Illinois Gateway Communities in Abraham Lincoln National Heritage Area. The other communities include Bloomington-Normal, Quincy, Danville, Springfield and Charleston.
Sarah Watson, Executive Director for the organization tells The Big Z in its first phase, 12 new highway signs have been located near the borders of the Abraham Lincoln National Heritage Area.

In each of the Gateways, visitors to the Heritage Area will find a place to get information about what to do, where to stay, and places to see. Watson says Looking for Lincoln and its partner communities are working on future plans to eventually include directional road signage and welcome signage for designated Looking for Lincoln communities throughout the program area.
